Lay Associates of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation
From the origin of our Congregation, Marie Poussepin understood that the mission of the community would be carried out by sisters and lay people together.
Called to follow Christ through a deepening of commitment to the Gospel, Lay Associates are men and women who believe that their own life and their relationship with God can be enriched by living the spirituality of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation.
Our Lay Associate program in the United States began in September 2001. We began with a group of 12 members coming from the Diocese of Fall River in Massachusetts and the Diocese of Providence in Rhode Island. These members were persons who mostly worked alongside the sisters in their ministries. They are younger, older, retired, working, single, married, widowed women and men. They participate in the charism of our Mother Founder, Blessed Marie Poussepin, while maintaining their own vocation and lifestyle.
After a formation period in which the candidates are instructed in the charism of the Dominican Order, its history and Dominican prayer life, a formal promise is made in the company of other Associates and the Sisters on the feast of the Presentation.
At the same time of our beginning of the Lay Associates program of the USA, in August of 2001 our Congregation began to collaborate with the Laity in Honduras to respond the needs of the poor.
Throughout these years in Honduras the Laity have supported and worked with the sisters so that the charism of Blessed Marie Poussepin is very much alive in Guaimaca and in Tegucigalpa. It was in 2011 that the sisters invited persons already collaborating with them in their ministries to be our Lay Associates. The first group of seven made their promises in 2012. Two years later wives and husbands of some of the Associates were invited to join the program.
At the present, we have 14 Lay Associates and two candidates in the United States and 10 Lay Associates in Honduras.
To be Lay Associate of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation today, is to live with our feet firmly on the ground. So, the personal and social realities such as the pandemic, family difficulties, social and ecclesial environment do not prevent us to serve with simplicity in the style of Jesus and Marie Poussepin.
Together Sisters and Associates try to live a life “firm in faith, unwavering in hope and generous in charity”.
